Publisher’s Note: The Common Core State Standards Initiative, also known as simply Common Core, is an American, multi-state educational initiative which began in 2010 with the goal of increasing consistency across state standards, or what Kindergarten to Grade 12 students throughout the United States should know in English Language arts and mathematics at the conclusion of each school grade. The initiative was sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

I was born in Punta Gorda and am the fourth of seven children born to my parents, Ted and Bridget Palacio. Our family relocated to Belize City when my dad was hired at Belize Teacher’s College where he later became the principal in the 70’s and 80’s. My mom was a housewife like many of the women at that time. Dad was fond of saying, “Your mom was the smartest in our class, but there were limited opportunities for girls and women, so she quit her formal education after the 8th grade.” My dad attended St. John’s College, so it was my goal to go there for high school, and I was very excited when I was admitted to my father’s alma mater. I graduated in 1977. My favorite subjects were English, literature, social studies, and Spanish. When I went to college, it was a natural choice for me to major in English.

After completing my bachelor’s in English, I enrolled and completed my master’s degree in education. Following my father’s footsteps, I started my teaching career in Los Angeles, California in a public school and taught for three years. I started formulating a plan to write a book about some of my teaching experiences. There are many human-interest stories that come out of the classroom. I felt such a book could help prospective or new teachers learn about this noble but rigorous profession.

I applied to UCLA, one of the world’s best universities, and was one of a few teachers who was awarded a writing fellowship. I was able to learn from the professors and my peers through extensive writing, sharing, and breakout sessions. During these sessions, we analyzed each other’s work in detail and gave feedback on what “worked and what needed improvement.” We discussed different writing techniques used to develop characters, plots, and narratives. My passion for writing blossomed at UCLA and that was when I started writing my first collection of stories.

I started writing about my teaching experiences which were raw and deeply personal. My first book which I co-authored with Mr. Paul Rallion, a fellow teacher, is Middle Schoolin—50 stories about the humor rewards and challenges of teaching. After being urged to join Facebook as a vehicle to promote my book, I discovered that social media was like the office water cooler, a place to meet and greet and share news, information, even gossip! With its ups and downs, good and bad, and power to connect people from all walks of life, Facebook was an excellent topic for both research and as a subject to write a book on; so, I did just that. I was one of the first authors to write about Facebook. The name of the book that I wrote is, Facebook Education from Middle School to old school and from Belize to the USA. I am particularly proud of my book, Garifuna Mother Tongue, which was well received and has over 30 five-star reviews on Amazon. This book traces my path from being interested in the Garifuna language and tells how I learned to love my mother tongue and how I did scholarly research on some of the intricacies of the language.

My interests are many and varied, I love to sing and I am the choir director at my church; I lead the congregation at two masses every Sunday. I have also developed my musical skills and have composed and recorded three songs that are also on Amazon. I am a news Junkie and love to be informed about news and current events at home and abroad. Learning to speak Garifuna more fluently and helping to preserve and pass on the language to others is one of my top priorities.

My future endeavors revolve around developing my passion for bringing people together through social media. My network on Facebook, where I have met many Belizeans, is over 100,000 members strong. It also includes over 20 groups that I started and participate in. It is not enough to write books. To promote and advertise one’s book, it is almost vital to have a social media presence or brand and a network to reach a vast audience of potential customers. I would like to help give back to the community through mentorship.

I credit much of my success to my beautiful and supportive wife of almost 40 years, Glendarice Palacio, also a career teacher, and my two amazing children, Victoria and Jeremy, both of whom are college educated and have successful careers.

I am very grateful and would like to thank Dr. Henry Anderson and his beautiful bride Stephanie for their friendship, support, and hard work for making this forum—Jabiru Books Belize LLC Newsletter available to Belizean authors like me. No one succeeds alone or without help from others. Thank you and keep up the excellent work.

About my motivation for my latest book, Pop Culture—75 Powerful Lessons From Jokes Memes and Inspirational sayings, I say, “The devil is a lie.” This is a common expression used among church goers. Doubt and negativity can result from lack of Faith, hence, they are of the devil!

When I first thought of writing a book about Jokes and memes, my initial reaction was no, it can’t be done, no one would buy it, and so on. I beat back the no’s, the negative thinking, and here we are. One year later, this book has ranked #1 twice already.” I reasoned: Since almost everyone has a cell phone and most people like to look at funny jokes and interesting memes and forward or text them to friends and associates, they would probably enjoy a book like this one.

Who uses their cell phone more: teens or adults? How often do you talk on your cell phone? How often do you text friends or relatives? How often do you "ask Google" or fact-check someone by jumping on the internet? What is your favorite means of communication? What do you text your favorite people the most?

If your daily ritual includes scrolling furiously through your text messages for knee-slapping hilarious jokes, GIFs, memes, or AI-generated viral videos like a hungry dog digging in the dirt for a bone, my book is for you. Welcome to Popular Culture, more commonly known as Pop Culture. Some examples of Pop Culture are found in music, film and television, fashion, social media, literature, and art.

An excerpt from Pop Culture 75—Powerful Lessons From Jokes Memes and Inspirational sayings:

“Have you ever forgotten your cell phone at home, and when you made this discovery—at school or work—you broke into a cold sweat and thought, heart pounding in fright or with a sinking pit in your stomach, "No! No! No! Oh no! This is bad, bad, bad!" You probably used an inappropriate word that I can’t say in this book. "What am I gonna do…I’m toast…" but you wanted to say "I’m ..." Fill in the blank.”
