Ode to the One-Eyed Lady is told through the eyes of young Edgar:
My name is Edgar Leslie and I am twelve years old, soon to be thirteen. My father’s name is Richard and he is 35 years old. My mother is Emma and she is 30. I have two sisters and a brother. Natasha is 9, Gabriel is 6, and Erika is 3.
I will tell you a story, an amazing story, a terrible story, most of which I experienced myself, trapped on a beautiful island off the coast of Belize. Other happenings were told to me, at a later date, and some I relate based on incidents that occurred. I must thank those who assisted me, greatly, in bringing together my story about a lady, a powerful one-eyed lady named Dorothy, Hurricane Dorothy.
The Appendix contains the tracts and histories of hurricanes that passed over or threatened Belize between the period 1934 – 2017, including many photographs. Ode to the One-Eyed Lady is a book for all ages.
On October 31, 1961, Category 4 Hurricane Hattie crossed Belize and destroyed Belize City and Stann Creek Town–now Dangriga–with much loss of life. Yesterday, November 2nd, Belize faced Category One Hurricane Lisa which make landfall just south of Belize City, bringing high winds and a tidal surge, causing more damage than many people expected. Below are the tracks of Hurricanes Hattie and Lisa. There is also a video clip of a report from a British Network about Hurricane Hattie. Did you know that the remnant low of Hattie went into the Pacific and became T.S. Simone then crossed Mexico and entered the Gulf of Mexico to become T.S. Inga?
