This day, called the Feast of Epiphany, Three Kings Day, and Theophany, marks the end of the Christmas Season. Christians around the world will mark the day with a series of celebrations that go from parades and gift-giving for children to the blessing of water. In Belize, it also marks the end to the Jankunu and Charikanari dancing in the streets, a tradition of the Garifuna communities.
Santa Claus may have gone back to the North Pole to rest, but it doesn’t mean the gift-giving and receiving is over, at least not for the thousands of children in Latin America and Spain anxiously awaiting ‘El Día de Los Reyes Celebration’ on January Sixth. In nearby Mexico, it is the day when everyone can enjoy the famous ‘Rosca De Reyes’ (Three Kings Cake). The oval shape of the cake represents the infinite love of God. The dried fruits symbolize the jewels embedded in the crowns of each Wise Man, and the figurine represents Baby Jesus. The entire cake represents the journey of the Three Wise men in search of the newborn Jesus. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the Kings found the divine child by following a star across the desert for twelve days to Bethlehem. Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar– representing Europe, Arabia, and Africa respectively–travelled by horse, camel, and elephant in order to present baby Jesus with three symbolic gifts. The gold offered by one of the Wise Men is a symbolic acknowledgement of Jesus’ royal standing as “King of the Jews,” while the frankincense manifests the divine nature of the baby’s existence, since He is not an earthly king but the Son of God. And, finally, the myrrh, often used to embalm corpses, was gifted to the newborn as a symbol of Jesus’ mortality, foreshadowing his death as a means to cleanse humanity of its sins. . The Governor General of Belize is the Representative of the King  Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam was sworn in as Belize’s third Governor General on 27 May 2021, taking over from former Governor General Sir Colville Young. The ceremony took place at the Government House, Belize House of Culture, in Belize City. With approval from Buckingham Palace, the transition was completed with a ceremonial passing of the flag as Her Excellency took up the post as Representative of the Head of State and the most senior diplomat in the country, Governor-General of Belize. On 21 March 2022, she was invested as a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, on behalf of Elizabeth II, Queen of Belize, during the Platinum Jubilee Royal Tour of Belize.

Honourable John Antonio Briceño is the fifth and current Prime Minister of Belize since 12 November 2020, and the leader of the People’s United Party since 2016. He was Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2011 and from 2016 to 2020. From 1998 to 2007, he served as the Deputy Prime Minister under Prime Minister Said Musa.
