BOLEDO Life is a Story – Story One This book is about overcoming odds and learning about the attachments and value we assign to money. My name is Cynthea Higinio. I moved to Germany in 2015 from Belize, where I was born in 2005. I am of indigenous and European background. I love to play basketball and listen to music. I speak English, German and Spanish. One of biggest goals is to travel and share my culture and learn about others. I enjoy spending time with my family both in Germany and Belize. I love telling stories about my early childhood to my younger sister, who was born in Germany. Sometimes my mom and I reminisce about our life back in Belize. My stories are usually about my grandmother and my great-grandmother, who we are lucky to still have with us. We hope to do her proud by sharing some of her life with all those who are interested in learning about how people around the world love, live, and triumph. Heartfelt Congratulations go to our Granddaughter, Cynthea, from Grandparents Stephanie and Henry, Dad Terés, Aunt Fayemarie and Uncle Jim, Aunt Tanya and Uncle Aaron, and all the family in Minnesota and Belize. WENTWORTH TOPSEY I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Belizean immigrant parents. My father had come to the United States to pursue higher education at Tulane University, where he studied archaeology and anthropology. His passion for history and culture led him to contribute significantly to research and works related to Belize, our homeland. Though I was born in New Orleans, much of my childhood was spent in Belmopan, Belize’s capital. I lived there until my father's sudden passing on October 9, 1995. His death marked a turning point in our lives and, shortly after, my family moved to Guyana where we stayed until 1997. My mother, longing for home, decided that we should return to Dangriga, Belize, in 1997 where we remained until 1999. My time in Dangriga deeply shaped who I am today. It was here that I immersed myself in the local culture and learned invaluable life skills. The community was my classroom, and I became adept at making drums, building dories (canoes), crafting fishing nets, and weaving hammocks. I spent days flying kites, playing marbles and crafting spinning tops with my friends. The sea was a constant companion, and I mastered diving and swimming while the land taught me the ways of farming and building cement blocks. I learned survival tips from the locals, knowledge that stayed with me as I grew older. These early years of my life, moving between cultures and countries, instilled in me a deep sense of resilience, creativity, and connection to my roots. Belize, especially Dangriga, molded my spirit, and I carry those lessons with me everywhere I go. For some of Wentworth’s music, go to: https://soundcloud.com/wentworth-topsey

A Historic Loss In Dangriga On the late evening of October 15, 2024, the Genico and Bowman building at the corner of Commerce Street and Kuylen’s Alley, Dangriga, burned. The building, over one hundred years old, was built as a family home by Hon. William Alexander Jex Bowman O.B.E, J.P, a former Mayor of Stann Creek Town/Dangriga. Interestingly, the home was built with White Pine imported from Canada. It did withstand Hurricane Hattie, October 31, 1961, having only a little lean to the north after the storm. In front of the outstanding building was a beautiful and well kept garden. The building also hosted the Genico and Bowman General Merchandise Store which faced Genico and Bowman’s Plaza, Commerce Street, now called Central Plaza. Beside the store was a garage which was later turned into a small shop. This shop was the Rum Shoppe of retired Captain Aurelio Pilar Kuylen featured in the book Rum Shoppe By The Sea. Illustration 40 is featured. The Anderson and Kuylen families lived on Kuylen’s Alley, adjacent to the Genico and Bowman building. The last to fall were the buildings, distant and solemn, the gravestones for an entire world. Dan Wells.
